A marine biology block brought the children in touch with local businessman, Bob Meek, who grows and harvests mussels in the Santa Barbara Channel.




Volunteer work at the Sea Center also gives the children a hands-on approach to marine science.

A trip to Santa Cruz Island fostered cooperative skills in the wilderness while studying the history of the Channel Islands.

A 4-month weaving project entitled “Island of the Blue Dolphins” was integrated into the study of local history. Fiber art engaged the hands while literature engaged the mind through reading the well-known story by Scott O’Dell with the same name.
