"To raise and educate our children so that they grow up to be secure, happy and responsible is the most important task for us.
In
1997, a vision of holistic
education with a strong
emphasis on taking children
outdoors became a reality
when long-time teacher Rob
Harrington founded
Orcaschool. Under
the new leadership of Lia
Grippo and Sharon Tollefson,
an enthusiastic community of
parents and teachers have
united in the advancement of
Orcaschool’s unique school
model offering an integrated
program that can be
considered the first of its
kind.
Orcaschool
is evolving towards deeper
integration of subjects,
weaving academics, arts, and
specialty classes with intimate
nature connection and organic
farming. Research and
experience shows that learning
is deepened by direct, firsthand
experience. This is a
school where children are
steeped in the
traditional academic subjects
of arithmetic, reading, writing,
science and foreign language
studies by
connecting deeply to the natural
world,
learning ancient skills, going
tracking, playing music,
discovering wild places and
learning the value of local food
systems. Woven among these core
subjects are specialty classes
such as handwork and fiber arts,
woodworking, visual and
performing arts, literature,
poetry and so much more. No
subject matter is separate from
the other and children
experience the interdependence
of themselves with everything
around them.
Collaborating with local
institutions
towards the aim of
cultural renewal,
Orcaschool
is working with Wilderness Youth
Project, The Center for Urban
Agriculture at Fairview Gardens,
and Quail Springs Learning Oasis
and Permaculture Farm to
help children develop an
intimate relationship with the
natural world and gain a genuine
foundation and understanding of
“stewardship.”
Orcaschool cultivates an environment where the whole world may be seen with a fresh mind. This could translate into learning about Egypt by constructing a pyramid on the beach, complete with geometric
definitions and precise measurements, or experiencing how to paddle a kayak safely through the shorebreak; it might involve a detailed study and hands-on effort in cleaning up our local creeks combined with active biology, botany, and environmental science.
Santa Barbara presents an abundance of educational opportunities in the cultural realm as well as the great outdoors. Our childrens natural enthusiasm for learning makes it possible to weave together a colorful tapestry of guided discoveries! Weekly field trips which integrate these opportunities form a central part of our curriculum.
Our environment of small cooperative groups brings the teacher and child together in a special relationship that allows the teacher to gain a deeper sense of who the child is as a person today, and who the child may become as an adult.
Weaving
together academics, arts,
practical life skills, and
deep nature connection,
Orcaschool educates the
whole child (body, heart,
and mind) and fosters in
each a life-long love of
learning. With innate
curiosity and a dedication
to stewardship, our students
meet the world with a sense
of mastery, ready to face
the challenges and
opportunities of their lives
and times.
